Anatomy, Age and Ecology of High Mountain Plants in Ladakh, the Western Himalaya the booklance

by Jiří Doležal (Author), Miroslav Dvorský (Author), Annett Börner (Author), Jan Wild (Author), Fritz Hans Schweingruber (Author)

This aesthetically unique book combines ecological, morphological and anatomical, as well as phylogenetic studies on plant material in a largely unexplored dry mountain region above the
timberline. It offers the first comparative analysis of hundreds of plants – annuals, perennial herbs and dwarf shrubs – in an area of 87,000 km2 at altitudes from 2600 to 6150 m above sea
level in the Western Himalaya. Characteristic landscape pictures of all major vegetation types and maps show at which locations and altitudes the individual species of vascular plants are
distributed, while macroscopic plant pictures and plant age are related to high-quality micro-sections and micro-photographs.

The anatomical features of 345 dicotyledons were characterized using the published coding systems and those of 155 monocotyledones were characterized on the basis of a newly developed key.
The number of annual rings and anatomical features of the xylem and phloem of dicots are compared and related to different ecological conditions within this extremely dry and cold
environment. The ecological and anatomical characterization is used to create a phylogenetic tree based on nucleotide sequences, and indicates which features are genetically stable and which
ones are modified by environmental factors.

Cochlear Anatomy via Microdissection with Clinical Implications the booklanceby Charles G. Wright (Author), Peter S. Roland (Author)This atlas focuses on selected aspects of cochlear anatomy as illustrated by material prepared by the microdissection technique, a three-dimensional perspective not possible with standard histological approaches. Although much of the material in this text was processed by the microdissection method, photomicrographs from conventionally cross sectioned inner ear tissues and scanning electron microscopy, are also presented. Taken together, these technical approaches provide different, complementary views of inner ear anatomy, and offer a more informative understanding than is possible with any of the methods used alone. While micrographs obtained from microdissected material appear sporadically in journal articles, there is no comprehensive collection of such images currently available. The illustrations assembled in this atlas are complementary to the more traditional histologic images and drawings available in standard texts, and aide in understanding the intricate anatomy of the cochlea.Cochlear Anatomy via Microdissection with Clinical Implications will be a useful resource for otolaryngologists, anatomists, audiologists, and neuroscientists. Those engaged in cochlear implantation, physicians and researchers in the growing fields of implantable hearing aids and drug delivery to the inner ear, and members of industry involved in designing, manufacturing, and marketing implantable hearing aids will also find this atlas of great value.

Anatomy for the FRCA 1st Edition the booklanceby James Bowness (Author), Alasdair Taylor (Author)Anatomy questions are asked in all parts of the FRCA examinations, and for many trainees it is a particularly daunting part of the exams. This important new book provides a comprehensive, exam-orientated clinical anatomy book for anaesthetists preparing for all parts of the FRCA. It covers all body regions, relating underlying anatomy to practical procedures and anatomical principles, spanning the breadth of the curriculum and comprising exam-style questions: a chapter of SAQ questions, one of OSCE stations, one of SOE questions and one of MCQs. The text is highly illustrated in full colour with ultrasound images, diagrams and photographs of cadaveric material and models. This is the first anatomy book specifically orientated for the FRCA exam, making it an essential resource for anaesthetists preparing for all parts of the FRCA examination.

Teaching Anatomy: A Practical Guide 2nd ed the booklanceby Lap Ki Chan (Editor), Wojciech Pawlina (Editor)The field of anatomy is dynamic and fertile. The rapid advances in technology in the past few years have produced exciting opportunities in the teaching of gross anatomy such as 3D printing, virtual reality, augmented reality, digital anatomy models, portable ultrasound, and more. Pedagogical innovations such as gamification and the flipped classroom, among others, have also been developed and implemented. As a result, preparing anatomy teachers in the use of these new teaching tools and methods is very timely. The main aim of the second edition of Teaching Anatomy – A Practical Guide is to offer gross anatomy teachers the most up-to-date advice and guidance for anatomy teaching, utilizing pedagogical and technological innovations at the forefront of anatomy education in the five years since the publication of the first edition. This edition is structured according to the teaching and learning situations that gross anatomy teachers will findthemselves in: large group setting, small group setting, gross anatomy laboratory, writing examination questions, designing anatomy curriculum, using anatomy teaching tools, or building up their scholarship of teaching and learning. Fully revised and updated, including fifteen new chapters discussing the latest advances, this second edition is an excellent resource for all instructors in gross anatomy.

Ammonoid Paleobiology: From anatomy to ecology (Topics in Geobiology Book 43) 1st ed the booklanceby Christian Klug (Editor), Dieter Korn (Editor), Kenneth De Baets (Editor), Isabelle Kruta (Editor), Royal H. Mapes (Editor)This two-volume work is a testament to the abiding interest and human fascination with ammonites. We offer a new model to explain the morphogenesis of septa and the shell, we explore their habitats by the content of stable isotopes in their shells, we discuss the origin and later evolution of this important clade, and we deliver hypotheses on its demise. The Ammonoidea produced a great number of species that can be used in biostratigraphy and possibly, this is the macrofossil group, which has been used the most for that purpose. Nevertheless, many aspects of their anatomy, mode of life, development or paleobiogeographic distribution are still poorly known.Themes treated are biostratigraphy, paleoecology, paleoenvironment, paleobiogeography, evolution, phylogeny, and ontogeny. Advances such as an explosion of new information about ammonites, new technologies such as isotopic analysis, tomography and virtual paleontology in general, as well as continuous discovery of new fossil finds have given us the opportunity to present a comprehensive and timely “state of the art” compilation. Moreover, it also points the way for future studies to further enhance our understanding of this endlessly fascinating group of organisms.
