Spherical CR Geometry and Dehn Surgery

by Richard Evan Schwartz (Author) the booklance

This book proves an analogue of William Thurston’s celebrated hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem in the context of complex hyperbolic discrete groups, and then derives two main geometric
consequences from it. The first is the construction of large numbers of closed real hyperbolic 3-manifolds which bound complex hyperbolic orbifolds–the only known examples of closed
manifolds that simultaneously have these two kinds of geometric structures. The second is a complete understanding of the structure of complex hyperbolic reflection triangle groups in cases
where the angle is small. In an accessible and straightforward manner, Richard Evan Schwartz also presents a large amount of useful information on complex hyperbolic geometry and discrete
groups.

Schwartz relies on elementary proofs and avoids quotations of preexisting technical material as much as possible. For this reason, this book will benefit graduate students seeking entry into
this emerging area of research, as well as researchers in allied fields such as Kleinian groups and CR geometry.

A Guide to Canine and Feline Orthopaedic Surgeryby Hamish Denny (Author), Steve Butterworth (Author) the booklanceThis successful book, first published in 1980 and now in its fourth edition, provides an authoritative guide for busy practitioners trying to keep pace with current trends in small animal orthopaedic surgery. In this new edition Hamish Denny and Steven Butterworth have retained the same practical approach but have completely rewritten and updated the book to provide a comprehensive review of orthopaedic and spinal conditions in the dog and cat. The illustrations have also undergone a major overhaul and the many line drawings are now combined with photographs and radiographs to clarify diagnostic and surgical techniques.Although the size of the book has increased, its regional approach to problems still enables the reader to use it as a rapid reference guide. It will prove an invaluable source of information for veterinary practitioners diagnosing and treating orthopaedic and spinal problems, while postgraduate students taking further qualifications in orthopaedics will find a sound basis for their studies and further reading provided here.

A 57-year-old man presented to the emergency department complaining of a worsening cough. The cough had been present for approximately two weeks and was productive of green sputum. The patient had seen his general practitioner one week earlier and taken a course of amoxicillin for a presumed lower respiratory tract infection with no improvement of symptoms. He was febrile, experiencing frequent headaches and a feeling of general malaise, and had been unable to eat solid food for the last 48 hours due to facial pain on chewing. You have been asked to assess him and devise a management plan…100 Diagnostic Dilemmas in Clinical Medicine presents 100 real-life scenarios seen in the hospital and community setting. A succinct summary of the patient’s history, examination and any initial investigations is followed by a detailed consideration of the diagnosis and management of each case, in the short, medium and, where appropriate, long term.Making speedy and appropriate clinical decisions, and choosing the best course of action to take as a result, is one of the most important and challenging parts of training to become a doctor. These extended true-to-life cases will teach students and junior doctors to recognize important medical conditions and to develop their diagnostic and management skills.Key features:
  • Extended case studies presented in an easy-to-read format, presenting patient history, examination, investigations and differential diagnosis
  • Readers are guided through the clinician’s sequence of thoughts and actions as they consider how to manage the case appropriately in the short, medium and, if necessary, long term
  • Plentiful illustrations supplement the text
  • A broad range of conditions is covered, from acquired haemophilia to intestinal tuberculosis

Robotic Surgery of Colon and RectumEditors: Graziano Ceccarelli, Andrea Coratti the booklanceThis is an open access book. Colorectal surgery is one of the most performed procedures in dedicated colorectal and general surgery units worldwide. In the last two decades, the minimally invasive laparoscopic approach has become very popular worldwide, attracting great interest among patients (lower risk of infection, less pain, and faster recovery) and demonstrating excellent oncological results.Technology is improving rapidly, offering revolutionary innovations, particularly with the advent of robotic surgery, which offers important advantages over laparoscopy for both surgeons and patients: improved ergonomics, wristed instruments, and a better vision. These advantages may be particularly useful for more complex and challenging situations (complete mesocolic excision, low rectal cancer, one-stage treatment of colorectal and liver metastases, etc.), translating into potential improved surgical and oncological results. Although several books have been published on the subject, the great interest in robotic surgery makes it mandatory, in our opinion, to have a general update in view of the latest technical innovations and the results of the most relevant and recent literature. The book is divided into chapters dealing with the different colorectal segments with their robotic surgical operations and specific technical variants. The new frontiers of benign and emergency colorectal diseases are also considered, as well as the new robotic platforms recently introduced in the healthcare market. Some of them, such as the da Vinci SP single port device, may represent a revolutionary approach for this surgery. Training and cost aspects were also considered.
